As the height of wedding season approaches, we are continuing to get to know our 2012 couples and we can't wait for everyone's upcoming wedding!! Kelly and Chris, one of our September 2012 couples, recently let us know how Chris' Thanksgiving proposal took a few tries before getting it just right. Here's the story from Chris' point of view!
As we all
know, Kelly is an avid runner; she's got a few (yes, I said a few) half
marathons under her belt. She's been running in races for years now, and every
year she's participated in the "Thanksgiving Race" in Manchester, CT.
Now, this
race is foolish, people dress up funny, wearing turkey outfits, and what not,
well, last year was the first year, Kelly's Dad (Garry) and I went to see Kelly
run this particular race. I thought, this year, wouldn't it be
great to be waiting at the finish line on one knee!
So, (after
getting permission from her parents of course), I bring it up, to Garry, the
Idea. Of course we had some laughs, but ultimately, we thought it would be
pretty cool.
Well, Kelly
comes home from work, and says, "I had an awful week, I don't know if I'll
run in the race tomorrow, we'll see how I feel when I get up." Well,
knowing Kelly, and how she NEVER would miss a race, I still know she's gonna
run. But, I'll call her Dad, and prep him just in case. and, If she
decides not to, I'll most likely just ask here before we head over.
So, hear it
is! Thanksgiving day is finally here! The morning of the big race!
Hm, that's
funny, I wasn't woken up early I just woke up on my own, where's
Kelly...? I walk to the kitchen, Kelly doesn't seem to be in her running
gear, "Morning Kel, Whats up?" She says, "I don't wanna
run in the race this year." I don't' wanna push it or give it away,
I just ask one simple question. "How come?" "I don't know,
I'm just not feeling it this year." Again, making no big deal, I
said, "Ok." No problem, Plan B right? Um, only problem
is, I have no Plan B!
First
things first, were going to my brother's house, for a brief visit with my
Brother, Sister-in-law, two Nieces (six and two) AND my Mother down from
Maine, all waiting to scream CONGRATULATIONS when we walk through he
door! I somehow have to get a hold of them, and tell them, she didn't
run, and not to bring it up...HOW?
As were on
our way over, I say, hey, looks like e need some gas huh? I figured, I'd pump
the gas, and make a quick phone call while I'm out there...We pull into the gas
station, Kelly says, I'll pump, you run in and grab a couple coffee's. As
I'm inside scrambling to make thee coffees as fast as I can, I see she's
already coming in to pay, it didn't work...Ok, I HAVE to make this call while
she's in the car with me...That outta go over well. The only hope I have
here is my Brother answers the phone, for any of you who don't know, Mike
and I share a brain, it's scary sometimes how we can communicate.
Phones ringing, "Hello" It's MIKE!! I say "Hey whats up?" I
figured I'd call and say were running a little late this morning, and
no." He says "No? So you mean, don't blow it?"
"Right!" YESSS!! SUCCESS! Kelly has no Idea!
So we
arrive at Mike & Holly's no problems, just some "Hey, Happy
Thanksgiving!" and of course, I was cornered by Mike, Holly and my Mom,
separately to ask me what I was gonna do next...I answered them all the same,
"I think when we get to Kelly's parents house, I'll ask on the deck, right
before we go in."
Ok, were
headed over to Kelly's parents, who, at this point, think I may have
proposed from home, so, they too, have NO idea. As were pulling
into the driveway, Kelly's Grandmother pulls in at the exact same time, and
Garry is coming out to help her with anything she may have to bring in the
house, at this point, Garry looks at me, I give him a quick shake of the head
no, he follows it with an eye roll! I try not to laugh, and proceed to
the house. Plan B was a bust! C'mon Chris, Think of Plan C!
After
taking some ribbing, and filling her parents in with the failure of Plan A and
Plan B we try to put our heads together and think of Plan C. GOT IT! When
everyone sits to eat, we'll have Kelly go get something from the Kitchen, and I
can place the box propped open with the ring in the middle of her untouched
plate, so, when she gets back, ta-da!
So, just as
every ones sitting, Kelly's mom (Karen) says, "Hey Kelly, could you please
get me some ice for my wine?" Kelly fires back, "Mom, no one
drinks wine with ICE in it." Karen kinda looks at me, I just
shrug, and if you all know Kelly, there's no wasting time when it comes to
supper being ready, she's already got half her plate filled with food, and she
gets up to get "ice", for her moms wine! Well, I'm not gonna put the ring
on her food!
AHHH!!!
PLAN D!!!
So after we
all stuffed ourselves with Thanksgiving dinner, I went to the kitchen, I no
sooner got there and Kelly walks in, she says, can you hold my wine glass, I'm
gonna fix my hair downstairs...I take her glass and follow her down....
We get down
there, and hear come the butterflies!! I'd be lying if I said they
weren't there...Shes fixing her hair, and in my hand, I got the ring, in
the box, flipped open, ready to make the move...
"Kelly........."
Well, she
said YES!! AND she's crying!! I think this is good...hahaha....We
went upstairs to tell everyone the news , and celebrate.
We absolutely love the the proposal story and the engagement photos! Thank you so much to Kelly and Chris for sharing. We cannot wait to celebrate your wedding day!!
